Weekly Update: Sept.14 - 17

As always, this was a busy week with a new seating plan to help reinforce name recognition. We started some new morning bins to work on practicing our fine motor skills and printing practice of our names with proper capitalization followed by lowercase. 

 
 






Monday:
Our focus today was about kindness and responsibilities. We discussed how we take care of ourselves, others and space - specifically at school. Many of them were able to recognize the many ways they are able to do this everyday.

Tuesday:
Learning task of the day was slanted lines. The proper formation is top down and it will help with printing letters like A, V and W.

Wednesday:
In Math today, we continued our work in patterns. We were able to make connections of how patterns are related to our world and all around us. They created simple AB patterns using classroom materials.

Thursday:
Each day this week, we spent a couple of minutes talking about Terry Fox. We learned about why he is an important Canadian Figure and why we continue to honour him. 
We participated in our annual Terry Fox Run today. We were so lucky to have Mrs. Stewart's Grade 3 class run with us and help guide us around the field. They were so helpful and made it more fun. Throughout the year, we will get to spend more time with them because they are our buddy class and will be amazing leaders in supporting us.

  • If you notice your child's face is blurred out on the blog, it is because permission was not granted or the Annual Authorization Forms have not been completed. Mrs. Brinson sent out a reminder email last week to have the Demographic Verification Forms and the Annual Authorization Forms (Consent for CBE Use of Student Information) filled out. It is important that these documents are filled out, so that we are up to date and for emergencies. These forms can be accessed on MyCBE. If this is your first child attending CBE, you will need to create an account. You will need your child's student number. If you are having a difficult time locating it, please email me. Once everything is set up, please go to School Engage to complete all forms. MyCBE is the portal to access school fees, bussing and to book conferences. Please bookmark this for easy access. 

  • If you haven't sent the questionnaire form back to school, please do so. The red agenda folder will stay at school and will only be sent home if there is a notice. 
  • A Healthy Hunger email was sent out this week. Healthy Hunger is a fundraiser that our Parent Fundraising Society runs to help raise money to help our school. Kindergartens only sign up for treat days because they do not have lunch. On the days that your child has ordered Healthy Hunger it will be delivered to them at school.

September is a month for practicing routines and building foundational skills. Our focus will be on building fine motor skills to help us with so many big jobs later like building stamina in printing and cutting activities and zipping our jackets.  We continue to play and learn together.   Tuesday:  You may have heard your child telling you about how we are exercising our fingers during Morning Bins and practicing pre-writing lines on whiteboards. Pre-writing lines are important in helping us form letters and numbers correctly.  We are also working on using correct pencil grip.     Our read aloud today was: Wednesday: We continued our work with vertical and horizontal lines. Ask your child about which directions these lines should go when printing. It is important to follow the formation as it will help with printing difficult letters. First Week in Kindergarten

The first week of kindergarten flew by very quickly. The children spent this week practicing classroom routines like removing their shoes before entering our classroom, finding their hooks, hanging their coats and backpacks independently. We begin everyday with Morning Bins to get our mind and body ready for a busy morning of learning big things. This morning routine is a time to practice and reinforce concepts we've already learned in class. At the same time, using tools that helps to strengthen their fine motor skills. We also get Free-Choice Centres everyday as this is essential as it allows children the freedom to choose their own play which helps build vital skills like independence, problem solving and critical thinking. This time also allows them to practice social skills and learn how to be wonderful friends, communicators and team players.
