First Week in Kindergarten

The first week of kindergarten flew by very quickly. The children spent this week practicing classroom routines like removing their shoes before entering our classroom, finding their hooks, hanging their coats and backpacks independently.

We begin everyday with Morning Bins to get our mind and body ready for a busy morning of learning big things. This morning routine is a time to practice and reinforce concepts we've already learned in class. At the same time, using tools that helps to strengthen their fine motor skills.

We also get Free-Choice Centres everyday as this is essential as it allows children the freedom to choose their own play which helps build vital skills like independence, problem solving and critical thinking. This time also allows them to practice social skills and learn how to be wonderful friends, communicators and team players.

Monday: Our learning task of the day was focused on learning each others' names and easing any anxiety around being away from our adults. We played a name game and drew pictures of ourselves on the first day of Kindergarten.

Tuesday: It was our first time going to gym with Mr. Newton and Mrs. Dziuba. (Mrs. Dziuba will only be there every other day) We played some cooperative games like line and freeze tag. Mr. Newton also taught us some calming exercises for our cool down activity. This year, we are very lucky to have gym everyday.

The read aloud today was:

Our big job today was to recognizing the first letter in our name.

Wednesday: After spending a couple of days at school, we read a book called Pete the Cat: Rocking in my School Shoes and talked about some of our own favourite things to do in our school shoes. There were some great ideas, about being outdoors and moving our bodies.

Thursday: Our read aloud today was, That's Not My Name. It talked about how special our name is.

We practiced our names in different ways - cutting and pasting the letters, writing our names with colourful markers and a name scavenger hunt at our desks to find our names.

REMINDERS:

- No school on Friday (Sept. 4) for Kindergarten students
- No school on Monday (Sept. 7) Labour Day for all students.
- Please send indoor shoes with your child if you have not done so.

Hug & Go:

There is a strict NO PARKING. The Hug & Go Zone is a two-lane drop off area, where the right lane is for stopping to let children out, and the left lane is for passing and exiting traffic safely. It is also extremely dangerous to let your child out on the left side as there are many moving vehicles pulling in and out. Kindergarten students should be walked to the door when possible, rather than dropped off on their own to walk to the doors unless they are accompanied by an older sibling. As the weather gets cooler and you want to drop off your child with an older sibling, please let me know. AM Kindergarten parents are permitted to park at the Hug & Go for pick up at 12:05.

A REMINDER FROM MRS.BRINSON
